Rising Phoenix Martial Arts Academy Soft Reopening

Hi everybody!
I hope you’re all doing well and staying safe!
I’m making plans for the reopening of the Academy…but I think it’s important for all of us to remember that we are not in charge of what this disease is doing!

You need to be ready to be disappointed if things go south and the Governor has to alter some of our plans.

Be that as it may, if all goes well I will be opening on at least Tuesday, May 26.

In my previous message I mentioned Monday the 25th, but it turns out my punch and kick-addled brain didn’t register that as Memorial Day, which it turns out… it is!

James Ashby has mentioned that he may be willing to open up on that date, but it is still tentative at this point.

There will be one hour sessions Monday through Friday at 11 in the morning, 5:30 in the early evening, and seven at night.

I will have the Academy set up with somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 to 19 training stations, each one separated from any adjacent training stations by at least 6 feet.

This is going to be tricky to get set up for each session!

I have no idea how many of you will show up, so I’m going to ask that if you want to be certain of securing a spot that you do so by letting me know either through text, email, Facebook message, or phone call.

If the day gets filled up I will post it on the website, on Facebook, and perhaps in a group email.

I will accept walk-ins if I have the room, but if you take that chance, you need to be ready to be turned away at the door.

We will need to be sure to avoid people reverting to habitual pre- “ social distance” behavior by avoiding traditional chokepoints like the restroom, the changing room, the passage between the front and rear rooms, and the front door.

Because of this, and because I don’t want anybody touching the water fountain, I’m asking that you each bring your own drink and please remember to take it with you when you leave!

The class is only an hour long, so try to have used the restroom BEFORE you come into the gym.

There will be up to eight hand sanitizing stations around the Academy, so there will be no need to go into the restroom to wash your hands!

Of course it will still be available for emergencies.

The changing rooms will be closed!

Come into the Academy wearing what you need to wear to train, and place whatever you take off as you warm up off to the side.

A good strategy is to leave most of your personal possessions in your vehicle, bring in your keys, and if you like, your phone, and keep them at your training station along with your drink.

If you are training on either of the red mat surfaces in the back room, please take off your shoes and leave them by the edge of the mat, preferably well away from anyone else’s shoes!

Another potential time for screwup’s is in the process of entering and leaving.

I don’t want people gathering around the front door!

If you are in the parking lot and you know it’s close to class time, and you see someone else at the door, please wait at least 6 feet away from them.

The door SHOULD be open on time, it won’t be necessary to knock but please step through and stop inside the door.

If you don’t see me or a staff member right away wait there until you do and that person will tell you where to go to find your station.

When the training session is over, please stay at your station until released by a staff member.

There will be two sessions each evening, with a half hour in between.

The staff will be sanitizing the Academy during this period. If you wish to volunteer to assist in this it would be much appreciated!

But we must follow guidelines, so I can only take A few volunteers at a time.

This has been a lot to digest!

I’ll send you another message soon in which I try to give you some idea of what kind of exercises and drills you might be doing during the training session.

Soft Opening Update Number Three

OK, now let me talk about what I have envisioned for you to do at your workout stations in the Academy when you come down.

There is a body of knowledge from each and every discipline that I have seriously studied that I can teach you, and that can be done without a partner!

My plan is to make sure that you get as intense a work-out as you want and as much technical instruction and correction as you need, all within the confines of your socially distanced station.

So if you have a preferred area of training, be it weapons, or any subcategory of weapons, or boxing, or kickboxing, or even solo grappling grills, whether you’ve trained in that area before or not, I can give you space that is safe to train in, and instruction in how to do it!

There are only going to be four of the 15 to 20 stations where you might get a chance to hit something as part of your work out.

But if you want to do that you will need to bring your own bag gloves, or MMA gloves.

Porous objects like bag gloves simply don’t make good candidates for regular sanitizing, so the ones that belong to the academy will be unavailable.

I have a stock of bag gloves for purchase at the academy.

There will be items of equipment there that WILL be OK for you to train with or on.

You will be told what those pieces of equipment are when you are there.

Any of the school’s equipment which you DO use, please let the staff know you did so that we can wipe it down during the cleaning interval.

When you get there I will assign you a station, ask you if you have a preference for weapons, striking, solo grappling drills, or simply exercise, or if you have NO preference.

I will then assign you a technique or exercise to get busy working on and then move on to the next student.

I will repeat this process until all students have assigned tasks and then I will begin making the rounds again.

There is no set level of fitness, knowledge, or experience necessary, I will assess and adjust the technical difficulty and intensity level in each case as I deem necessary.

My plan is for you to get a one hour session of technique and exercise that you will enjoy and learn from!
